Building trust with your hamster, step by step

A new hamster has a lot to take in. A gentle, patient approach goes a long way.

1. Let them settle in

Set up the habitat before your hamster arrives. For the first few days, keep your hands out of the home and simply talk softly nearby.

2. Offer treats from your hand

Let your hamster sniff your hand and take a small treat. Make sure your hand doesn't smell like food.

3. Spend quiet time together

Sit in a small, safe room, such as a bathroom with the floor covered in soft blankets, and let your hamster explore you at their own pace.

4. Scoop gently

When your hamster is relaxed, scoop them with both hands like a bowl. Stay low and seated, because hamsters can leap and have poor eyesight.

Every hamster is different

Some love climbing on hands and some prefer to watch the world from their habitat. Both are okay. Always supervise children, because hamsters are small and delicate.
